Acne
What is acne? Acne is a skin disorder that affects the pilosebaceous units. It is characterized by the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pimples), pustules (pus-filled spots), and occasionally even deeper nodules and cysts. These blemishes typically appear on the face and the upper part of the trunk, although they can also develop on the glutes and thighs. What causes acne? Acne develops as a result of several contributing factors. These include an alteration in the keratinization process of the hair follicle, an overproduction of sebum, and the bacterial overgrowth of a microorganism known as Propionibacterium acnes, among other potential causes. Addressing these underlying factors often requires targeted, professional skin treatments specifically designed for acne management.
