Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) and is one of the most widely used substances in aesthetics and aesthetic medicine for performing superficial to medium-depth exfoliation.

Derived from natural sources such as sugar cane and fruits (including pineapple and grapes), this organic acid weakens the lipid bonds between corneocytes (epithelial cells). This accelerates cell turnover and promotes the removal of the outermost skin layer, revealing the healthier-looking layers beneath.

Due to its small molecular size, glycolic acid penetrates deeply, stimulating collagen synthesis and fibroblast metabolism at the dermal level.

At the epidermal level, a Glycolic Acid 50% peel induces the detachment of the stratum corneum. At the dermal level, it reaches the dermal papillae within minutes of application, stimulating the formation of collagen and elastin. As the outermost layer is shed, healthier and more radiant skin is brought to the surface, making it highly effective for scar revision treatments.

With repeated applications, there is a significant improvement in the structure of the connective tissue, and dermal thickness can increase by as much as 20-30%.

Glycolic Acid 50% is recommended for scar reduction and the improvement of wrinkles, chronological aging, photoaging, uneven skin tone, and stretch marks. It produces a gradual epidermolytic effect by weakening the binding capacity of the lipids that hold dead epithelial cells together.
